I have five kids with me on Thursday mornings. We are going to be interviewing five residents from Quarry Hill, writing a piece of their story and publishing it. Our end product will be a copy of the book for each of the residents. We will have additional books for sale with proceeds to go to a charity of the student and residents choosing.
We have had three classes so far and have talked about recording devices, fundraising, interview questions, a little bit of history over the past 80-90 years that may come up in class and did a project from the book I’m going to use: “The Journey: A Celebration of Life” by Lee Q Miller
I had them draw a picture/floor plan of the first house they remember living in (or if they’ve only lived in one, that one) and start to jot down a word or two about each room. They found that it triggers a memory and they came up with little stories to write just based on that.
Today the students were each given a digital voice recorder to use for the class and they practiced interviewing each other – and me! At the end of the day they seemed to be having fun and truly enjoying the process. I am excited to see what happens next week when they interview teachers.
